Drawing a plan of your house, step by step

The method

1. Measure every room

   With a tape measure or a laser meter, note the length of every wall, the thickness of the walls at the openings, and the position and width of every door and window. Put it all on a freehand sketch, room by room.

2. Draw the outside walls

   Start with the outline of the house. In Plan², pick the Wall tool and click at the start then at the end: each wall joins the previous one, and corners stay closed when you move one.

3. Add the partitions

   Then draw the inside walls, corner to corner or up to the middle of a wall. Each wall type has its own default thickness: 20 cm for an outside wall, 15 cm for an inside wall, 7 cm for a partition.

4. Place the openings

   Doors, windows, bay windows and garage doors sit on a wall and follow it afterwards. Choose the opening direction and the hinge side in the properties.

5. Check the dimensions and areas

   Every wall is measured, and every closed room shows its area, worked out from its walls. Compare with your notes: this is when a wrong measurement gets caught.

6. Furnish and equip

   Kitchen, bathroom, electrics, heating and furniture come at their usual sizes and snap against the walls.

7. Export

   Keep the plan as a JSON file to pick it up later, and export a high-resolution image per floor to share or print it.

Mistakes to avoid

• Measuring a room along one side only: no wall is perfectly straight, so take two measurements.
• Forgetting the wall thickness: areas are read inside the rooms.
• Placing furniture in front of a door: check each door’s swing before furnishing.
